SO WHAT THE HECK ARE MALA BEADS?

Hello, dear friends! I've been excited to share this post with you! Recently Cody got me these beautiful mala beads, as a little belated birthday gift. I absolutely love them! I'm so happy to be incorporating them into my daily practice.

I've gotten a couple questions about what mala beads are and how to use them, so I wanted to give you a little bit of info about them. Maybe you'll find yourself interested in a set!

The run down on mala is this: Mala is a string of 108 beads (sometimes less) with a focus bead (called the Guru bead.) in the middle. This is the largest bead on the string and often has little tassels etc (you can see mine above, tapering off with a silver bow bead and smaller coloured beads.).

Now, mala beads are beautiful, so you could just wear them as an accessory, but they are so much more than that! Most often they are used as a tool for meditation and yoga.

They are used to count your mantras during meditation, and then (if you'd like) can be worn as a reminder of whatever intentions you are working towards.

You can wear them around your neck, or wrap them around your wrist.

Why 108 beads?  There are tons of explanations out there as to why the number 108. A few being:

-There are said to be 108 Earthly Desires in mortals.
-9 & 12. 9 and 12 are considered to be sacred numbers with spiritual significance in many traditions. 9 times 12 = 108.
-Heart Chakra. The chakras are intersections of energy lines and there are said to be 108 converging to form the heart chakra.
-8 extra beads. reciting a mantra 100 times is considered completed. The extra 8 are there for errors or omissions, also said to be an offering to one's higher power, Guru, highest truth.

There really are tons more!

I really don't think there is a right or wrong way to choose a mala. Typically the one that draws you most is meant for you.

There are different meanings for the material each mala is made with, or the gemstones used. So its best to just choose the one you gravitate towards most.

Once you get a mala you can "bless" or "cleanse" it, if you'd like . some people get them blessed by a lama (not a llama..) but for everyone else, you can pray over it to your higher truth/power/god/universe etc. you can hold it over sage or juniper smoke while setting an intention over it.

Honestly though, it doesn't have to be fancy/religious/ hippie ish at all. I simply lay it in the window sill to soak up the moon or sunlight. You could do nothing though and that's cool too.

You can be very traditional in the mantas you use during your meditation. Or you can use modern mantras like these:

  • “I change my thoughts, I change my world.”
  • “Every day in every way, I’m getting better and better.”
  • “I surround myself by those who make me better.”
  • “Where I am right now is exactly where I need to be.”
  • “I am at peace with what is, what was, and what will be. I forgive you. I forgive me.”
  • “I have a purpose in this life.”
  • “I am open to the abundance of the universe.”
  • “I am enough.”
  • “I am a magnet for joy, love, and abundance.”
  • “Money flows easily and effortlessly to me.”

  • But really, the most important one and really the only one you need is

    THANK YOU

Using your mala beads is really simple. you just start at the on closest to the big (guru) bead, and use your thumb to "count" each mantra, gently pulling it towards you when the mantra is completed and moving on to the next bead. there are more technical ways to hold it, but that's entirely up to you if you'd like to look into that.

If your mala happens to break, no worries, it's considered good luck. A sign of progression or a breakthrough in your personal growth.

I got this one (for a steal) on amazon right here if you want to check out this particular one.

I hope you enjoyed this little chat about mala beads. Do you use them? have you been wanting to?

    HIS NAME IS WALL-E

Hello dear friends! How have you been?

I've been pretty quiet on everything in the last month. The kids were hit with a cold, which brought down everyone's immune systems, and then we were slammed by that terrible flu going around. I hope you all escape it because it is genuinely awful. Thankfully, Grayson was spared (THANK YOU BREASTFEEDING🙌🏼) and I got it the worst.

This was two weeks ago. Now, I won't go into detail, but I was the most sick, the most times. To the point that my throat bled 🙊.

Skip ahead to earlier this week, I was doing dishes, blasting Italian opera and Italian-American hits, singing along with full gusto. As one does... Well apparently my throat was not completely healed, because the following morning I woke up and could hardly talk.

Today's the third or fourth day and I'm able to mostly talk, but I still sound pretty rough. As you can imagine, making videos is pretty tough without a voice.

    *croak* "word...Wo-cough/weird puberty noise-rd... W-odd goose call- or....d"  NOPE!

It's not all bad though. I've actually been really enjoying getting back to the simple (most important) things. Really focusing on the kids and enjoying each interaction. Organizing and brain storming the coming months of homeschool. Laughing and cooking and just not stressing about getting videos up or anything of the sort. Put my eggs back into my basket if you will.

So, I guess in a weird way, thank you flu. Sometimes it takes praying you don't shit your pants, to appreciate those little moments again. That could be on a hallmark card...

In other news, I've downloaded an app to blog on my phone which, turns out, is very productive. So expect more in this space.

Also BIG shout out to Cody! He built me my computer this week, and as soon as the editing program is on there and ready, videos will be back up on my YouTube channel. Woot-woot 🎊

Sharing a computer with your avid gaming husband, in the small space of "kids are sleeping, mom will pass out soon", is quite challenging. Now thanks to his hot nerdiness, problem solved. My computer is beautiful. I got stickers for the case and have named him Wall-E (seriously you have to call your computer something when you set it up. Why not give the poor thing a name?)

Alright friends, there is a little update for you. I will see you soon. I have some videos that have been waiting to be posted, and lots of things I want to talk to you about here.

I hope you are all keeping well, and enjoying those little moments as much as you can.

    ✌🏼️ Xx

    The Field of Wishes

Happy Friday! Today was the first farmers market of the summer for our town. We came home with lots of goodies, but on our way, we stopped to play in the "field of wishes" to blow our dandelion wishes and frolic in the sunshine.

Friday is "girls night" for us. A special night where we play and laugh and paint nails. Sometimes we watch movies too! We end the night with a "sleep over" where Mackynzie and Cody switch spots and she sleeps with me and Grayson (since she now sleeps in her own bed.). It's a fun little tradition that I am absolutely loving!

    From Blog to Vlog

I completely forgot that I never really "announced" that we switched to YouTube here on the blog. I figured most of you link through social media, but just in case, we switched from blogging to vlogging!

Before Grayson was born, I decided I needed to figure out what I was going to do with the blog. I wasn't really feeling it anymore. That's when Cody and I started chatting about doing daily vlogs on YouTube. We filmed Grayson's birth and then eased our way into vogging, and now we are putting up daily videos! We really love it. It's fun and such a nice keepsake for our kids when they grow up (and us too!)

We decided we wanted to introduce this space as an addition to the vlog. We will be posting things like the occasional recipe, or photos, or little blurbs of things we didn't get a chance to chat about on the vlog, or more detailed things. You get the idea.

If you haven't already, you can go to the links tab at the top of the blog, and go check out our channel.

Be sure to check out the new "About Us" section for more info.

    Hugs, friends!

    The last Weeks: Week 2

See the intro to this project here
    and week 1
You can follow this project daily on instagram: #rainbowspregnancyproject

January 7th: "I love watching you sleep. You are so peaceful and I can't stop staring. I often take this time to do a lot of self reflection and goal setting about being your mama. I can't promise you I won't mess up- I have. Or that I'll be perfect- I'm not. But I make a promise to you every single night, that I will continue to be better with each day. I will learn from today and even if it's just a tiny improvement, I will do better tomorrow. I will never stop learning and growing and trying. Thank you for being so forgiving. For understanding and always loving me. You teach me what life is really about, every day. Thank you, my sweet blessing, for allowing me to humbly grow with you."

January 8th: "today we did a lot of playing. You are so creative and funny with the games you come up with! You love to play with anything you can be creative with. Little figurines and things like this train and track. You invent stories, and have funny conversations. You remind me to let go and be a kid, no matter how old I am. Something I'm having to relearn, but you are the very best teacher."

January 9th: "this winter is special. We have played outside laughing until our bellies hurt! Rosy cheeks, cold noses, and frosty hair. We climb through huge snow drifts and rescue each other and laugh some more. I'm so happy to have this winter with just us. You really are my warm sunshine, Mackynzie Rei!"

January 10th: "each morning, you wake me up with a kiss and ask me to help you in the washroom, followed by requesting a light to be turned on. You then give me another kiss and play quietly on your own while I lay in bed and wake up fully. I can't get over how thoughtful and patient this is! After I've had a few minutes, you ask if I'm ready for breakfast. We hold hands, since I can't carry you right now, and go to the kitchen to make breakfast together. Thank you for these lovely mornings. I'll cherish these memories always."

January 11th: "today we ran our errands. You love this time because you love to play in the truck. You pack a bag of things to play with, and we spend the morning doing our usual; taking Carly to the dog park, grocery shopping, and going to any other needed store. Some Saturdays are our library day too. You make errands way more fun. Plus, hanging out in the truck with you is always a blast."

January 12th: "today was mama's blessingway. You invited your best little friend to play with while mama and our friends and family gathered in the living room. Your daddy hung out with you two and fed you guys yummy snacks and played with you! It was so much fun! We love watching you create special friendships. You two hug and kiss each other's cheeks all the way to the door, when it's time to say goodbye. Your little cup is always so full after playing with your friends. You choose not to have a lot of friends, but you sure make the friendships you decide to have count."

January 13th: "You have been signing since you were a baby. It was and is a huge factor in how mature you are in your speech, understanding, and emotional development. You are most proud of this one though. 'I love you'. It was hard to learn how to hold your fingers, but once you got it, you were so proud! You beam every time and love that we can send each other this little reminder. Especially when we are far away from each other, or too upset or shy to talk. I love you so much! In every language!"

    The Last Weeks: Week 1

Click here to view the first post, explaining this project. Feel free to follow along via instagram at #rainbowspregnancyproject

December 31st: "There are about 6 weeks left that it's just the three of us. Mama is full term in 4. Although, you correct anyone who tells you your brother will be here soon, telling them he is already here and part of our family. You are so wise beyond your years, my love. Today we played 'burry' in the snow. You thought it was THE funniest thing. Those moments when we are looking at each other, belly laughing, are some of my very favorite. I hope we continue to have more and more as we grow together. Thank you for making me laugh. I love you."

January 1st: "today we spent the new year having some awesome family fun. We played and wrestled and laughed. Daddy and I took you to the sled hill so Carly could pull you down in your new sled. You walked home, admiring everything your little eyes saw. I'm so grateful to have you reminding me to stop and see the beauty in everything at all times. There is always time to enjoy the life around you. Thank you for always teaching me, even if you sometimes need to remind me."

January 2nd: "Today, I decided to cut your hair. You were just bathed and sitting quietly, so I jumped on the opportunity. You refuse to see a hair dresser, and you are firm in "growing your hair long. Like mommy's", which I am perfectly and happily fine with. We talked about how we were going to have to trim it a little after christmas to keep it healthy and growing though. You didn't protest, but kept telling me you were nervous while I cut it. I can't say I blame you, I'm no hair dresser, but it turned out good all things considered! You were happy with it afterwards, and told me we could just never cut it short. I know how important your hair is to you; I'm honored to be allowed to cut it for you. Stay you, sweet girl. I love you!"

January 3rd: "Sharing sleep with you, has been one of the most grounding parts of motherhood for me. Hearing your soft sighs, cuddling close in the wee hours of the morning, waking to your smiling face; even when we have rough days, we are always brought back together by the night. Safe and still in the quiet, any troubles from our day forgotten. I know one day you will want your own space, but for right now, I'm grateful you choose to share your sleep with us. Xoxo"

January 4th: "you take such good care of our animals. They are so important to you. You have such a beautiful and tender heart, and you have always been connected to nature and animals on a deeper level. Something that really makes my soul happy to be able to share with you. These two dogs are your best friends. Whoever said diamonds are a girls best friend must have never had a dog to grow up with like you, my love!"

January 5th: "one of the most satisfying things for me is watching you and your daddy together. You have such a special and precious bond between you. He is your best friend, and your safe resting place. You both share an understanding that is yours alone. The relationship you have with your daddy, and the special things you share are different than with you and I, and I'm so thankful for that. You will learn things I could never teach you from him. He loves you with every ounce of his giant heart, and I know you love him with all of yours. I know you two will always play silly games and cuddle as close as you can forever. We love you! Xoxo"

January 6th: "teaching you is such a joy. You are so hungry for knowledge! I didn't expect to be homeschooling you while 8 1/2 months pregnant, but I'm happy we are. You couldn't wait a second longer. I may be your teacher, but I know that you have and you will teach ME far more than I could possibly teach you. I hope I'm always open to learn your precious and invaluable lessons."

Blog challenge: Day 2- 20 Facts about me

    1. I don't drink alcohol. Cody and I went on a 'beer hunt' for me a few months before I got pregnant, because I wanted to see if I could find one I liked. No luck. I just hate the taste of alcohol.

2.I don't swear. It's very rare to hear me genuinely cuss. However, I'm apparently a sailor in my sleep! Cody tells me I swear about things when I'm half awake. (for example, Cody will be coming to bed and i'll be like " what the F*** was that sound? I have no memory of swearing, but apparently I only say the F word.)

    3. I don't drive. I don't have a licence and for Many reasons. I have no desire to get one.

    4. I'm not necessarily scared of heights, but they make my entire body (especially my hands and feet) tingle like crazy.

    5. Growing up I was always told I looked like Buffy the vampire slayer's little sister. I never saw it.

    6. I go stir crazy very easily, and need to take frequent trips out of the house. Whether that means an outdoor activity, or a trip to the store. I just don't do well cooped up.

    7. I love meerkats. I don't know if that's why I have a chihuahua, or if I like meerkats because I have a chihuahua.

    8. I talk through movies. A lot. But only with Cody and he actually enjoys it.

    9. I have no tattoos or piercings, apart from my ears.

10.I'm a list maker. I always have several lists going at once. I'm also a journal hoarder.

    11. I'm only ticklish when I want to be. I can turn it on and off.

    12. I'm a morning person, and don't do well past 10pm. In fact, if it gets too late, I get really hyper and goofy.

    13. I love the ocean, but it also really freaks me out.

    14. I can rocket saliva from underneath my tongue, otherwise known as 'gleeking'. Attractive, I know.

    15. I used to be REALLY extroverted. Social butterfly, always wanting to be around people. Now that I'm older/a mom/ grounded in myself, I'm finding I really like to be alone with my little family. I do enjoy friends and going out, but it's much more specific, low key, and I don't like to be around too many people for too long.

    16. I'm very outdoorsy. I need to have contact with nature all the time. Winter is really hard for me.

    17. I am a deeply spiritual person, but I do not consider myself any specific religion.

    18. I can't stand top 40 pop music. Or country.

    19. I really don't like old movies or TV shows. I have no reason for it, they just bug me.

    20. I have only just learned to dress for myself and nobody else. To wear what I feel good in and makes me happy.

The Last Weeks: A Photo Project

    December 31st:

    * * * * *

I am doing a photo project to document our last weeks as a family of three, before our sweet boy's arrival. I will be posting a photo and brief description/message every day for our last 6 weeks. I'm using Instagram to share the daily photos, and will recap each week here on the blog. Maybe creating a keepsake book for Mackynzie afterwards.

Feel free to follow along daily through instagram, or weekly through the blog.

    Christmas 2013 through photos

A really quick glimpse of our christmas through crappy iphone pictures. We tried to remember to take photos, but we just focused on enjoying our time together. This year was really great. It was quiet, calm and really peaceful. A perfect last christmas of being a family of three!

A couple of these are from christmas eve, when our family goes to Cody's grandma's to do a family dinner, and family gift exchange. Then, we all do our own christmas mornings and meet back up on christmas day for dinner.

We open stockings first thing in the morning, on our bed. They get put in the bedroom on christmas eve to be filled, so in the morning we open them and eat breakfast in bed before going out to open presents.  We also open new jammies on christmas eve to wear to bed (and lets be honest, christmas day.)

You will have to forgive that they are out of order, I was trying to get these on here, but they are from both our phones and I didn't want to spend 20 mins arranging them haha.
