Christmas 2013 through photos

A really quick glimpse of our christmas through crappy iphone pictures. We tried to remember to take photos, but we just focused on enjoying our time together. This year was really great. It was quiet, calm and really peaceful. A perfect last christmas of being a family of three!

A couple of these are from christmas eve, when our family goes to Cody's grandma's to do a family dinner, and family gift exchange. Then, we all do our own christmas mornings and meet back up on christmas day for dinner.

We open stockings first thing in the morning, on our bed. They get put in the bedroom on christmas eve to be filled, so in the morning we open them and eat breakfast in bed before going out to open presents.  We also open new jammies on christmas eve to wear to bed (and lets be honest, christmas day.)

You will have to forgive that they are out of order, I was trying to get these on here, but they are from both our phones and I didn't want to spend 20 mins arranging them haha.

A Polar Express Party

I'm sitting here, Christmas lights glowing,  chatting Cody's ear off about everything I have pondered today. Thank goodness for the way my mind can flow from one random thing to a complete other, because I remembered I never posted about our polar express party! I sat down to edit photos only to find myself saying a big' ol NOPE, because I am trying my hardest not to pile on too many things that just aren't really necessary. Sure, edited photos would look nicer, but I'm reminding myself that I am a priority (especially when pregnant.), and that magical moments shine through even the grainiest of cell phone pictures.

****

This year, we hosted our very first polar express party. I remember seeing my very first north pole party, and getting that giddy christmas excitement to share that experience with my own kids. The polar express is probably my favorite christmas movie, and we watch it every christmas eve, so I decided to make that  our theme since it felt so much like christmas to us.

Mackynzie was officially old enough this year,  to understand, appreciate and be super excited for a party like this. I set a rule for myself to "keep it simple", with things being busy with christmas and the fact that I'm pretty darn pregnant, I didn't want to over-do myself. (This pregnancy has required me to really pick and choose where my efforts go, or I get put up on the couch for an entire afternoon drinking loads of water and nursing sore hips and braxton hicks contractions.)

It wound up being perfect. Simple, yet plenty of magic. I don't think my little girl has ever had so much fun at an event, so that right there made me feel like a million bucks.

Pajamas where required of course.

The break down of the afternoon was: A play session while we waited for all of our guests, gluten free cookie decorating, and a hot chocolate bar with popcorn to enjoy while we watched the polar express.

We collected all the throw pillows, giant teddy bears, and throw blankets and flopped them on the floor to create a giant, cozy, movie watching lounge for littles.

The cookie decorating was a big hit. I loved watching what each little one chose to put on theirs, and even the specific placements on some. Kids are really hilarious in the way they like things.

Once their bellies were full of cookies, they all watched popcorn pop, filled little bowls, grabbed their hot cocoa's and piled into the living room to watch the movie.

We had 8 kids and 3 new babies. This is most of the gang from our natural parenting group. I feel so fortunate to have these sweet friends in our life!

At the end of the party, Mackynzie handed out little bells that said 'believe' that we made together. If you have watched the movie, you will know why I love this little detail so.

It was a big success for our first go at it. Mackynzie cried when it was time to say good-bye (which took me by surprise, because she has never done that before!). She hugged and kissed her friends, and thanked them for coming. I can't even tell you how precious it is to see your child form friendships they are so passionate about. It fills my heart right to the top to see her share so much love with her friends.

Reports started coming in shortly after from all the mamas, that every kid was either snoring for the night before they got home, or that they crashed shortly after. Sign of a good Christmas party? I think so!

Happy New Year!

I know it's not new years day today, but I wanted to say happy new year to everyone anyway. Happy new year!

I don't really know how I feel about new years resolutions. Sometimes I think they are great; it's a great time to start fresh and it's always a good thing to have drive and goals. Sometimes, I think  they are also a set back on making and keeping goals (you vow you will do something, you put your heart into it because it's new years, and then it hits you hard and you feel like a failure when you don't succeed. Usually resulting in a bigger set back or opposite of the goal.). Either way though, I think it's a good idea to create realistic inspirations for the new year. That way, there is no failing, just trying again. And again, and again, and again if need be.

I saw a list similar to this somewhere (I think instagram) but it was gone by the time I went looking for it. These are my inspirations for this year:

I almost stopped blogging over the holiday, but here I am, so I will be delayed on posts from Christmas etc.

I hope everyone had a lovely new year celebration!

Zoo Lights

Last night we packed our warm clothes, picked up Cody from work, and went to gaze at the beautiful lights the zoo puts up every year. Non of us have ever been (well, I went when I was something like 10 years old.) so it was the perfect opportunity to cross it off our list.

The weather was perfect (we thought it was going to be quite cold, but it turned out to be a nice -6C!) and paired with candy cane hot chocolates, it was a fantastic night.

A Cookie Party

We had a cookie decorating play date yesterday. It was super fun! It was short notice, so only a couple of her friends could make it, but it was just perfect. Mackynzie was excitedly chatting with me about how her friends were coming to decorate cookies with her, and all the fun things she wanted to do. She helped set up, picked up her toy area, and eagerly waited at the window.

They had a blast with decorating, and had fun playing together afterwards. Success :) And of course, they enjoyed eating their master pieces!

Cuddles and Cookies? You bet!

It's getting closer! I can't believe this is the last week left until Christmas  Yesterday was my day at home, aka do everything I can that needs to be done before things get busy, so it was filled with the last of the baking, cleaning, visiting with my girlfriend, feeling overwhelmed around 1:30 as per usual, reading stories, giving kisses, and helping a little girl who was having a trying day.

Today we are having a couple of Mackynzie's friends over to decorate cookies, drink non dairy hot chocolate and play. I hope they have lots of fun together, and I will be sure to share photos of messy hands and faces. Then we will probably snuggle up and watch one of my favorite Christmas movies.

With this time of year being so busy, I am trying really hard to have lots of connecting moments with Mackynzie. Tune out the world and make sure she knows that she is safe, loved, and that she can relax. Yesterday told me that we have strayed too far from our normal diet for her to handle, and that mama has been too busy buzzing around. So I am making sure that we have some down time every day leading up to Christmas  while still having a fun outing every day.

I just want to make sure I am as in touch with her as possible, especially right now. I want to see the wonder in her eyes as we look at twinkling lights and brightly colored bows. I want to feel her excitement and share it with her. I want to tell her stories of Santa clause and his reindeer, and see her listen with joy as I explain his trip around the world. I want to soak up every bit of this season and be still in it.

This sweet little girl brings us so much joy and happiness. And she has a fantastic sense of humor.

Here's to sweet cuddles, quiet moments, and happiness this holiday season. Cheers!
